Japan's Institute of Agro-Environmental Technology announced recently that its researchers have discovered a yeast found in rice leaves that can effectively decompose biodegradable plastics.

Microbial degradable plastics are plastics that can be degraded by microorganisms in the natural environment. According to the Japanese "Daily News" report, the researchers noticed that the surface structure of microbially degradable plastics is similar to the surface structure of plant leaves, so they suspect that the microorganisms that break down the leaves can also decompose the microbially degradable plastics.

In a comparative experiment, the researchers selected a microbiologically degradable plastic film made from polybutylene glycolate for agricultural production. It takes about 1 month for the film to start decomposing in the soil. If this kind of film is placed in a tray to which yeast is added, it can be decomposed in as little as 3 days.

Researchers believe that this discovery will probably help solve white pollution caused by waste plastics.
