Recently, British marine equipment manufacturer Cathelco provided a ballast water treatment (BWT) system for the "CC Pacifique" barge of Coastal Carriers in the Netherlands. The steel barge will be converted into a cable-laying vessel.
Cathelco receives orders for ballast water treatment systems for Dutch cable-laying vessels
The ballast water treatment system was ordered by V.Delta, a V.Group group. The international ship management company is carrying out the modification of the 120-meter barge in Singapore.
It is reported that the ballast water treatment system has a processing capacity of 300 m3/hour. Based on a combination of filtration and UV technology, the system can handle most challenging raw water efficiently.
In May 2014, the ballast water treatment system was certified by the International Maritime Organization and passed the US Coast Guard's US Army Standard (AMS) acceptance in the following months.
Cathelco offers ballast water treatment systems with capacities ranging from 34m3/hr to 1,200m3/hr. To maintain its effectiveness, the system automatically adjusts the quality of different seawaters. Unlike some ballast water treatment systems that simply measure turbidity (suspension sediment), Cathelco's ballast water treatment system uses a UVT sensor to measure UV transmittance and the amount of UV radiation actually passing through the sea.
It is understood that Cathelco's latest version of the Evolution ballast water treatment system is currently undergoing a live/dead standard test required by the US Coast Guard and is scheduled to pass type approval in the third quarter of 2017.
The independent laboratory designated to oversee the US Coast Guard type test program is Lloyd's Register of Shipping. The onboard test will begin in July/August 2016 and all experimental results are expected to be submitted to the US Coast Guard for certification in the first quarter of 2017.
