Guide: Yangcheng Evening News reporter Yang Hui, correspondents Shi Yun, Chen Jiejun, Liang Guangyuan report: At present, the entry standard of the domestic PM2.5 monitoring instrument market has been controlled by the US National Environmental Protection Agency EPA, and the monitoring instruments used in various places around the United States are mostly Thermo Scientific. The company is mainstream. Why domestic PM2.5 monitoring equipment has been "keeping in the depths of the people"?

On March 23rd, the Guangdong Provincial Department of Environmental Protection organized media to visit the Jiangmen Atmosphere Super Monitoring Station, domestic monitoring products of Wuhan Tianhong, Hebei Xianhe, and Anhui Blue Shield Optoelectronics Co., Ltd. for the first time collectively unveiled the Guangdong PM2.5 surveillance market.

The reporter learned that at present, domestic PM2.5 monitoring instrument market is still inconclusive with the use of domestic instruments or instruments from foreign big names. The Guangdong Provincial Environmental Protection Bureau is grinding the disc sand monitoring station and Jiangmen Heshan atmospheric super-monitoring station and closely compares domestically. External and manual sampling instruments use different methods to monitor the degree of error between the instruments to determine which instruments will eventually be used.

Domestic goods are half cheaper than the United States

Since PM2.5 monitoring was included in routine monitoring by environmental protection agencies, the Guangdong PM2.5 instrument monitoring market was dominated by the United States's instrument manufacturing companies. The relevant person in charge of the Guangzhou Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau once stated that Guangzhou’s monitoring sites “have no domestic equipment and all equipment comes from United States".

However, the equipment in the United States is not impeccable. The major domestic media have been questioning the certification standards of the US Environmental Protection Agency and the accuracy of US company equipment. The National Environmental Protection Agency is also using domestic instruments to conduct comparative tests. On the 23rd, the reporter saw at the Jiangmen Atmosphere Super Monitoring Station that domestic auto-monitoring instruments that were participating in the comparative tests in Guangdong were products of Wuhan Tianhong, Hebei Xianhe and Anhui Blue Shield Optoelectronics. The manual sampling equipment used for comparison was mainly from Wuhan Tianhong. the company.

The reporter found that the appearance of domestic equipment and imported equipment is exactly the same. However, with the same shape of the equipment, foreign equipment prices are generally between 20 to 380,000 yuan, domestic equipment prices between 10 to 200,000 yuan, only half of foreign equipment. Li Kai, a technical staff of Wuhan Tianhong Company, told the Yangcheng Evening News reporter: “Our instruments are very simple to operate and can be read automatically after a simple maintenance.”

Key technologies are still in the hands of the United States

The person in charge of the Guangdong Provincial Environmental Monitoring Center stated that only one province in Guangdong must ensure that 97 monitoring sites in the province have the ability to monitor PM2.5, and that only the purchase of Guangdong's fiscal equipment will require investment of 100 million yuan. Monitoring staff training, site allocation costs will be calculated separately. During the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” period, 388 prefecture-level cities in China will invest at least RMB 2 billion in the PM2.5 monitoring equipment sector. Coupled with the application of industrial pollution source monitoring equipment, the output value of pollution source online monitoring equipment industry by 2015 will surely exceed 10 billion yuan.

The reporter learned from the Department of Environmental Protection that there is no problem in the accuracy of domestic equipment compared with foreign countries. The problem is still in stability. The relevant person in charge of the Guangdong Provincial Department of Environmental Protection stated: “In fact, the key components of domestically-made equipment are the equipment imported from the United States. The stability of domestically-made equipment is not as good as that of imported equipment.”

This reporter learned that, in addition to the Jiangmen atmospheric super station, Guangdong Province Environmental Protection Department set up in the monitoring point of the grinding disc sand began to use domestic instruments to monitor PM2.5. Whether domestically produced equipment can make a difference in the US-led PM2.5 monitoring instrument market still needs to be observed.

Expert doubts

"Plant adsorption" does not affect monitoring

The monitoring sites are surrounded by forest farms and rural areas. Will plants absorb PM2.5, leading to distortion of monitoring data?

Dr. Chen Duohong, head of the Heshan Super Atmosphere Monitoring Station, Jiangmen: Vegetation leaves do absorb PM2.5, but the amount of adsorption is small and does not affect the accuracy of the monitoring results. This can also explain why some park monitoring sites with good vegetation coverage have higher monitoring values than other monitoring sites in urban areas.
