The reporter recently learned from Guangzhou Customs that the import growth of auto parts in Guangdong has slowed down. In May 2011, the import value was only US$200 million, which was the lowest since June 2009. According to Guangzhou Customs statistics, from January to May 2011, Guangdong imported 1.28 billion U.S. dollars worth of auto parts, an increase of 1.7% over the same period of 2010 (below). Statistics show that in January 2011, imported auto parts in Guangdong reached US$320 million, which is a record high since the financial crisis in 2008, an increase of 41.7% year-on-year. In February, due to the Spring Festival holiday, the year-on-year growth slowed down significantly. The year-on-year reversal of the growth rate began to decline in March, followed by a sequential decline in April and May. Guangzhou Customs believes that Japan is the largest source of imported auto parts in Guangdong, and imports from the EU and ASEAN maintain rapid growth. From January to May, Guangdong imported auto parts from Japan for 1.09 billion U.S. dollars, accounting for 85% of the total imported automobile parts in Guangdong during the same period. During the same period, imports from the EU were 130 million U.S. dollars, an increase of 48.5%; imports from ASEAN were 28.32 million U.S. dollars, an increase of 36.8%. From the perspective of the types of enterprises, foreign-invested enterprises dominated, and state-owned enterprises’ imports increased rapidly. From January to May, foreign-invested enterprises in Guangdong imported 900 million U.S. dollars worth of auto parts, which accounted for 70.1% of the total value of imported automobile parts in Guangdong during the same period; state-owned enterprises imported 340 million U.S. dollars, accounting for 26.2%, up 11.5% year-on-year. Judging from the import methods, more than 90% of the imports are in general trade, and import surges in the way of special customs supervision. From January to May, Guangdong imported 1.17 billion U.S. dollars in automobile parts by general trade, accounting for 91.5% of the total imported automobile parts in Guangdong during the same period. In the same period, imports of 70.15 million U.S. dollars in the form of special customs supervision of the Customs, an increase of 3.7 times. Although the growth rate of imports slowed down, the demand for imported auto parts in China is still increasing. According to an analysis by relevant experts from Guangzhou Customs, as China's auto companies have not yet fully realized their production and assembly, local engines and other key components still rely on foreign imports. The demand for auto parts from domestic auto companies, especially multinationals, is increasing. At the same time, as the number of imported cars in China continues to rise, the maintenance market for imported cars is also increasing, and the import vehicle maintenance market basically relies on imported spare parts, which also increases the demand for imported parts.
