Madagascar Ambatoby Nickel Mine

Description: Ambatovy is a laterite nickel mine located 130 kilometers east of Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, with a designed capacity of 60,000 tons/year. The feasibility study was completed in 2006, when the total investment was expected to be $2.25 billion. In August 2007, the estimated total investment increased to $3 billion. The infrastructure project began on November 8, 2007. It is expected to be put into production in 2010, with an annual output of 10,000 tons. In 2011, the output reached 30,000 tons, and all production reached in 2012. The mine is expected to be mined for 27-37 years.
